How to Use Keywords in a Blog Post in 2019-2020

How to Use Keywords in a Blog Post in 2019-2020

So you found a keyword
that you wanna target in
a blog post, fantastic.
Make sure you read this article
because I'm gonna teach
you how to use keywords
in a blog post so that you
can rank higher in the search
engines, get more targeted
traffic to your website,
and hopefully just get better results.
Now what's great is that you
have a target keyword in mind.
That's the first step.
If you haven't done that
research yet to figure out
which keywords to target, well make sure
you check out that card up above
to show you some free tools
you can use to discover
what those keywords are.
There's also a link below
in the description as well.
But after you have that
keyword, what do you do?
Well let's first talk
about what most people do.
Now, some people go crazy
with that keyword and stuff it everywhere.
They have it three times in the title,
20 times in the description,
and it just becomes
something that a human who reads
that blog post is not gonna enjoy.
You do not wanna do that.
Other people, they don't have
a strategy going into it,
so they kind of just write and
let things happen, and as a
result, some posts maybe do
well and other ones not so much.
Now to make this easy for you,
I'm gonna give you a three-phase strategy
that's gonna make it very simple for you
as you move forward into the future.
So, let's begin.
Phase Number One is our research phase,
and it's research beyond just
what that focused keyword is.
We need to do some research in and around
that focus key word.
So, let's dive into a Google
doc so we can set this out.
So here we are in a Google doc,
and I'm just gonna type in focus keyword,
and let's just use email
marketing as an example,
and I'm just gonna type that in here,
focus keyword email marketing,
and that's gonna change
to the post title potentially
after this kind of gets fleshed out.
But as you can see here, in google,
if you have keywords everywhere installed,
you'll see that the search volume here
is 90,500 per month, which is great.
We can put that down
here just so we can have
some reference, so search
volume 90,500 per month.
Next, we wanna find relevant keywords.
These are longer tailed
keywords or related key terms
that people are using in and
around this particular topic.
So we're gonna keep track
of this here as well.
And to do that, quite
simply all you have to do
is go back to Google, and really easy,
all you have to do is scroll down.
Here's some related
searches to email marketing.
So email marketing examples,
how to do email marketing,
email marketing definition,
strategy, benefits,
companies, free, what is email marketing,
and how does it work?
You can also see the search
volumes for each of these here.
Again, if you had keywords
everywhere installed.
See, relevant keywords are
important to understand
because these are other terms
that we should also be
discussing within our blog posts.
This shows relevancy toward
that bigger seed keyword that we have,
and also shows Google
and other human beings
who are reading this
post that we kind of know
what we're talking about because remember,
these are things that
people are searching for
in addition to and related
to our seed key term.
Now SEO and keyword research
can go far far deeper
than this, but I'm trying
to make this simple for you.
So we're actually gonna
stop there for Phase One.
Again, very simple.
I've tried teaching other
people some more complicated
strategies before, and they
just kinda get hung up.
So I'm gonna give you the basics
and the foundational items
here, and really it's all about okay,
what's that seed keyword,
and what are the related terms
people are searching for.
That's Phase One.
So, at this point, you're already done
and let's move on now to Phase Two.
Phase Two is the content creation phase,
and it has five different
components to it,
which we'll go over right now.
First, it's gonna be
all about your approach.
You wanna approach your
blog post as if you're
about to create something
that is more amazing
than any other blog post that's out there.
And when you have that approach,
you're gonna take a little bit more effort
to create something that's
gonna stand out from the rest.
It's gonna have somebody share it
and also have Google rank it higher, too.
The approach is really important,
and there's a few ways to make sure
that you're approaching
it in the right way.
First, you wanna make
sure that you put yourself
in the shoes of somebody
who's about to read this post.
Understand where they're at.
What are their pains and their problems?
And what transformation are
you about to write for them?
How are you gonna create
that transformation
through this blog post.
That's how your blog post
is gonna be structured.
What am I doing with my hands right now?
It's weird.
Number Two, provide
some sort of quick win,
so near the beginning of that post,
maybe not necessarily the first paragraph,
but in some way shape or form
have a person do something
or perform some sort of exercise
or even think about something
in a way that allows them
to realize something or have
something that they didn't have
before, just within the
first paragraph or two.
That's gonna help them realize
really quickly that wow,
I should read the rest of this
because I'm already getting
a lot of value from it.
Okay, so in addition to the approach.
The second thing you need to focus on.
The second element of content-creation
that's really important
related to these keywords
is that you use your focus keyword,
the target keyword that
you want to rank for,
in the first sentence of your blog post.
Use those keywords or key
phrases exactly how you want
them to be found in the first
sentence of your blog post.
It doesn't have to be
the first set of words,
but just naturally in the first sentence
so that a person who reads it understands
what this post is about but
also Google when they crawl
through it they'll understand
what it's about, too.
Now, that focus keyword's gonna
also appear throughout
the blog post naturally.
Make sure just naturally put it in there,
but in addition to that, and
this is point number three
here in concentration, and
that's those relevant keywords.
They need to be sprinkled
throughout this post as well,
and the better that you can organize them,
the more likely it is that
it's gonna be a well-structured
post, such that it shows
relevancy to that main keyword
and also is something that a human being
would enjoy reading, and it makes sense.
So, going back to our google doc here,
you can see that the focus
keyword is email marketing,
but we have relevant keywords.
That makes sense to be a
part of this blog poast,
and now it's even giving
me a little information
about how I might be able to
structure this blog post, too.
I can have, perhaps, the first part
be email marketing definition,
and then I can go into
the benefits, right,
and then I can go into the strategy,
I can give some examples, I
can offer different companies,
I can even perhaps have a deal
where a person can get
email marketing for free.
Now the fact that I'm
including these shows relevancy
to that main topic that I'm talking about,
and it shows a human being that, okay,
this is an authority post,
which of course Google
is trying to be as human as
possible when determining
what is the best content out there
to serve when a person
searches for that thing.
Number four, make sure
you include H3 sub-headers
for different sections
within your blog post.
There's a couple reasons
why this is important.
Number one, you just don't
want a giant block of text
that's going to just bore people to death
and look like an essay
that you wrote in college.
You wanna write for people who
are reading on the Internet,
which means you need to make it scannable,
which means you need to
have different sections
that are divided by these
sub-headers, so bolder text,
larger text, that just shows okay,
here's the next section of my blog post.
Now, if you can include relevant key words
and things people are typing into Google
in those H3 sections as well,
it's gonna have a little
bit more weight about that
relevant keyword injected into
your particular blog post.
So, again, there's a thousand factors
that go into what ranks
a webpage on Google,
but these little things, they stack up,
and they add up for sure.
And number five, this isn't
relevant to the keywords
that you're using, really,
it's relevant to just
how you should write, and that is
you wanna write engaging posts.
You wanna write so that
a person will wanna
starts at the beginning.
The very first paragraph.
Like I said, the very first sentence
is gonna have that focus keyword, right?
The first paragraph should entice people
and make them want to continue reading
on to the next paragraph,
and this is something
that doesn't come naturally
to a lot of people,
but you wanna create your
open loops, or your hooks,
so that a person is just like
oh, of course I'm gonna keep reading.
There's a few different ways to do that.
You can start with a story.
Stories hook people in.
Number two, you're gonna share with people
what the benefits are of
continuing to read them this post,
like here's what you're gonna
get and why it's important.
And number three, creating
some sort of hook or open loop,
meaning you're gonna share something,
but you're not gonna give
it all away until later
at the end of the post.
That often does a good job of
keeping people reading, too.
Alright, so that's Phase Two of content.
Just to recap one more time,
number one make it awesome,
approach it as if you're creating
the best piece of content
about that topic in the world.
Number two, have your focus
keyword in the first sentence.
Number Three, sprinkle relevant keywords
throughout the blog post.
Make sure you include those,
and those could potentially
be the subsections
of your blog post, too, which of course,
number four is to also
include H3 sub-headers,
so that you can make it scannable
and also show relevancy and more authority
to those particular topics
within the blog post.
And number five, again, write
so that people will keep reading.
Alright, Phase Three.
This is really what ties
everything together.
It's really important,
and that is the metadata.
Now, there's some front-facing things
that we're gonna talk about,
but also a lot of back-end
things that Google will see
that again shows relevancy
for that key word and
strengthen authority as well.
So, let's dive right in.
First up, with, actually
a front-facing thing
called the title of your blog post.
Now the title of your blog post
is obviously very very
important for a few reasons.
Number one, it's the first
thing that people see
before they dive into any of
the content that you write,
so you need to make that
title great, curiosity-driven,
to share a little bit about
what they're going to get,
but you also want it to
match what they're likely
typing In to search and find your content.
So, very simple, when it
relates to the keyword
that you're using, make
sure your focus keyword
is right there in that blog post title.
So I'm here in Google now, and you can see
that I've typed in start an
email list, and besides the ads,
actually, my website comes
up a couple of times, here.
So you can see, how to
start an email list in 2018,
so that's for my site.
The same post down here, how
to start an email list 2018.
Email marketing strategies,
that's mine as well.
And if you scroll down here, look,
there's an image of me with
a article of the same thing,
'cause I targeted that same
keyword in Google, too,
because they do cross-promote each other.
That's another great way
to utilize your keywords
is to create a YouTube article
about that same thing and then
to actually embed that article
into your blog post, too.
That's kind of, I would say,
Phase Four, if you will,
because this is a Phase Three
article, or three-phase article,
that might be the next step
after you get these implemented.
So anyway, I wanna click through
and show you exactly what's here.
So, remember, how to start
an email list is the keyword
and here it is in the title:
how to start an email list.
So that helps Google show
that this is a relevant,
helpful item for people
searching for that thing,
and it also just
straight-up tells the person
what they're gonna get
when they come here.
Alright, number two,
the URL, the web address
should also include the
focus keyword in there, too.
So as you can see in this blog post here,
how to start an email
list is right up there.
It's part of the web address,
and that's just set up
as I write this post in WordPress.
Number Three, you also wanna
include your focus keyword
right there in the
description of your blog post.
The description is the part
right underneath the title
in the URL when a person
finds you in Google,
and this is really
important because it shows,
well first of all, it shows Google,
because hopefully your
focus keyword is there,
that this is about that particular topic,
but it also shows a
person on the other end
that that's what it's about,
and you have a little
bit more room to include
a little bit about what that
post is gonna help them do.
So as you can see here on the back-end
of my WordPress website, I
get a little snippet preview,
and I'll talk about just
how I do that in a minute,
but this is what it looks like in Google.
So how to start an email list in 2018:
step by-step, that's the title.
The URL is there, and
again this matches, too.
And then, learn how to start an email list
with this step-by-step tutorial.
I'll walk you through the basics
of setting your business
up for email marketing.
So very simple and clear
what they're gonna get
when they go here.
Now you'll notice that also the keyword,
the focus keyword is bolded
here, how to start an email list
and also how to start an email
list here in the description.
That's actually what
happens in Google, too,
and it helps your blog post
stand out a little bit, too.
How do you make this happen?
And how do you preview it like this?
Well, I use a plug-in
for my WordPress site
called Yoast SEO, and
it's the best SEO plug-in
that you can use, especially
because it's quite
user-friendly, especially for beginners,
but also it shows you really
cool previews like this.
Now what's really cool is when
you create a new blog post
every single time, you can
put a focus keyword in here,
and it will just make
sure that, hey, you know,
you're doin' everything right,
you'll have a checklist,
it'll also mention okay,
when you don't have
the focus keyword done correctly.
And again, this just stacks
things in your favor,
so that you can give yourself
the best chance to rank and succeed.
I'll put a link below in the description
for those of you who are using WordPress.
You can download and install this plug-in,
which is free to use.
And then finally, you
related it to metadata.
A really quick, easy thing to do
and just something to practice
is when you have images
in your blog post, which
I would recommend having
because it just breaks up the content,
makes it look nicer,
has it become memorable.
I would make sure that
you make the alt text
for those images something
related to your focus keyword
or a relevant keyword.
What is the alt text?
Well, when you're including an image,
there's a number of fields
that you can fill out,
like the title of that image
and all sorts of things, captions,
and one of the most important
things is the alt text,
that is, the text that shows up, if,
for whatever reason, were
to not actually load.
This text would show up instead.
This is something that Google looks at,
again, just to see what
that image is about.
It also gives you a chance
to be found in Google
images search as well.
So as you can see here,
here's a thumbnail.
I could likely pick a better
image, but as you can see here,
I just titled it how
to start an email list,
and how to start an email
list here for the alt text,
and I'm just gonna hit
update, and there you go.
So when you include an
image, make sure that you get
into the practice of also
including the alt text with it,
and make sure it's
relevant to that section
that you are including that
image in in your blog post.
Now for some of you who are reading this,
you might be like, Pat,
this stuff is kind of basic,
but you know thanks for
reminding me, and that's great.
But most of you, I'm sure,
who are following through
with this, are going to be
beginners, who might be a little
overwhelmed from what we just
talked about, and that's okay.
I made it simple.
We just talked about
the foundational items.
You can go way deeper into this,
but we're not gonna worry
about that right now.
Start simple, but most important
thing is to just start.
So start doing this, creating the habit
of going through this
process every time you create
a new blog post, so
that you'll stack things
in your favor and have the best
chance to rank and actually
see some results from all the
hard work that you're doing.
But the number one tip that I
can give all of you right now
in relation to making sure
that this is gonna work for you
moving forward, is to make
sure that you plan ahead.
And this is something
that I actually didn't do
until about two years
ago, and before that,
I would approach blogging like this:
I'd go to my computer,
and I'd begin to write,
and then I'd wonder, well
what am I gonna write about?
How am I going to tackle this?
I don't know where to start.
I just got on that content hamster wheel,
where it just felt like a struggle
every time I had to write something new,
so I got rid of that, and with the help
of a lot of my team
members, we created a system
by which it's a lot lot easier
now and less overwhelming
for me to create blog
posts and create content,
and that is simply planning ahead.
So once a quarter, we
all meet, my team and I.
And if it's just you,
it'll just be you and you.
That's okay.
You meet, and you think
about, okay what content
am I gonna create for
the rest of the quarter?
And that way, you can
start to actually create
these templates for what the
focus keywords are going to be.
What are those relevant keywords?
So when you approach a blog-writing day,
you're never gonna have
a blank page anymore.
You'll actually have a head
start with the focus keyword,
what those relevant keywords are gonna be.
You can go even deeper and
plan a little bit ahead of time
in terms of okay what
stories am I gonna cover?
What points am I gonna make?
What quotes am I gonna share?
Do yourself a favor, and plan ahead.
So cram all that decision-making
for what you're gonna write
about into one or two days early on,
so when it comes time to write
again, you're never gonna
struggle in terms of what
you're gonna write about.
You're gonna focus on making
the best content that you can.
So hey thank you so much
for reading this article.
If you enjoyed it, hook me up with a like.
And make sure you subscribe
to the channel already.
I've got a lot more content comin'
for all you bloggers out there,
and hit the notification bell, too,
so that you can get instant access
to new content as soon as it comes out.
You actually get a notification
when I come out with new articles, too.
So, before you go, I'd love
to get a sense, very simply,
I wanna ask you, how long
have you been blogging for?
I'd love for you to comment below
with how long you've been blogging.
Maybe it's a few months.
Maybe you've just started.
Maybe you haven't started yet.
Maybe you've been doing it for years.
I'm actually comin' up to
a decade of blogging now,
which is insane!
So, hook me up with just how
long you've been blogging,
and I'd just love to get to know you more.
I look forward to your comments.

Thank you
